CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The Asbury University baseball team fell 10-5 on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the River States Conference (RSC) Championship Tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio.
The Eagles are still alive despite the loss and will play in a win or go home game tomorrow at 11 AM against top-seed IU Southeast. The Grenadiers lost in their first game to Midway to open up the tournament.
AU got on the board first in the top of the third with three runs to take a 3-0 advantage. The inning started with Paul Haupt's RBI double which scored Trevor Campbell. Colton Back would bring Haupt home on a squeeze bunt single to make it 2-0 Eagles.
Later in the inning, Back would cross the plate on a PPU error in the outfield.
The Pioneers responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to tie up the contest. Point Park would take a 5-3 lead off of a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth.
The Eagles would tally one run in the top of the fifth after Back scored for the second time of the day off of a stolen base to make it a 5-4 ballgame.
After a weather delay, PPU came out and scored four runs bottom the seventh to pull ahead 9-4. AU would only score once more in the top of the ninth after Garrett McIntire's RBI single scored Alejandro Jivanjee.
Paul Haupt led the AU offense with a 3-4 performance at the plate with a run and RBI. Trevor Campbell collected two hits. The duo both finished with a double each.
Jivanjee notched a triple in his final at bat.
Will McDonald got the start and threw 3.1 innings of work, striking out one.
Tyler Morrison, Logan Reitter, and Chase Martin closed the game out from the bullpen.
