FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The Asbury University softball team collected a win at Kentucky State on Tuesday during their non-conference doubleheader.
The Eagle lost game one 4-3 but held on to take game two 7-5. Asbury has now won nine games on the year.
AU will play their final 12 games of the season at home and will return to action on Friday at 5 PM for a doubleheader against Ohio Christian.
Game one
The Eagles battled hard in the first game and held an early 2-1 lead after the first two innings of play. KSU re-took the lead with one run in the third and two in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 4-2 game.
AU would get a run back in the top of the sixth to make it a one run game, but were unable to close the gap further.
The Eagles stranded eight runners on base in the contest. Asbury picked up seven hits total as a team.
Bree Sanders connected for two hits and an RBI and finished 2-3 at the plate. Paige Hill and Emily Rogers both snatched one RBI a piece.
Deana Phillips, Caitlyn Taylor, Madison Moss, and Heather Laird all posted one hit each. Laird, Shauna McKain, and Hill all tallied one run scored.
Deana Phillips got the start in the circle for game one and pitched three full innings. Phillips did well in the circle and gave up zero earned runs in the outing.
Sanders took over in the final three innings.
Game two
Asbury got off to a strong start in the second game and built an early lead with a run scored in the top of the third.
Kentucky State would quickly take the lead back though by scoring two more runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 2-1.
AU put together an impressive five-run inning in the top of the fourth to build a 6-2 lead. Asbury tacked on one more run in the fifth to lead 7-2.
KSU made a late comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh as they scored three runs in the inning, but Asbury was able to get out of the jam.
For the game, Sanders registered three hits while Paige Hill and Caitlyn Taylor also collected multi-hit games with two hits each. The trio finished with one RBI each.
Deana Phillips was 1-4 with an RBI, while Bethany Marcum also posted a hit and an RBI. Kamry Wells added an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Hill and Madison Moss both scored two runs.
Hill got the start and finished with a no decision. She pitched three innings while Ally Moore recorded the final four innings of work to get the win.
