BEREA, Ky. -- The Asbury Unviersity softball team split a doubleheader on Monday evening at Berea in non-conference play.
The Eagles lost game one 5-3 but took game two 11-6. Asbury is now 6-18 overall on the season.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday at Oakland City for a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 3:30 PM.
Game one
Deana Phillips ripped a solo homerun in the top of the first to give AU a 1-0 edge early on in the opening stages of the contest.
Solid pitching from Paige HIll in the circle through the first three innings kept the Eagles ahead by a run. In the top of the fourth, Asbury added to its lead with another solo homerun, this time from Faith Day, her first of the season.
With a 2-0 lead, AU remained ahead through the first five innings of play, despite giving up a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Day had another RBI with a single to left which scored Emily Rogers and made it 3-1 Asbury.
However, Berea would score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to comeback and rally for the victory.
Hill struck out eight despite the loss in the circle.
AU collected six hits, with Day leading the way with a 2-3 effort at the plate.
Game two
Once again, Asbury jumped out to an early lead. This time though, the Eagles would pull ahead and would not give up the lead.
RBI from Phillips, Day, and Kamry Wells had the Eagles out ahead 3-0.
Asbury would score three more runs in the second inning. The inning started with an RBI single from Caitlyn Taylor followed by an RBI double from Faith Day.
With AU ahead 6-0, Berea would cut into the lead and made it a 6-4 game heading into the sixth.
Paige Hill's RBI double and Deana Phillips' two RBI double gave Asbury three extra runs of insurance.
The Eagles scored their final two runs of the game off of a wild pitch and an error.
Ally Moore got the start and the win in the circle for Asbury. Moore pitched five full innings and struck out three. McKenzie Meyer pitched the final two innings of action in relief and recorded two strikeouts.
Hill, Phillips, Taylor, and Bree Sanders all recorded multiple hits in the contest. Phillips led the way with three RBI.
