WILMORE, Ky. – The Asbury University women's lacrosse team set a new season-high in goals scored on Saturday afternoon in their 20-7 rout victory over AAC conference opponent Brenau.
The Eagles improve to 4-4 on the year and also move to now 2-2 in league play.
AU is back in play at home on Friday against Montreat at 4 PM.
Despite scoring 20 goals in the contest, it was not the ideal start for Asbury. The Eagles trailed 2-0 early on in the opening minutes of play.
However, after a quick timeout AU re-grouped and found their rhythm offensively.
Mia Doron put the Eagles on the board first, followed by back-to-back goals from Maddie White to put Asbury in front 3-2.
Moments later, both teams traded goals as AU remained ahead 5-4. Over the next nine minutes, Asbury would score seven unanswered goals to build a comfortable 11-4 advantage. The Eagles went into halftime ahead 11-5.
AU out-scored Brenau 9-2 in the second half and Aubrey Currell led the team in the half with five goals scored.
Asbury eventually built a 10-goal lead and then slowed things down in the final 10 minutes of the half with a running clock already in motion.
In total, Currell tabbed six goals on the day while also scooping up a team-high eight groundballs. Six goals scored marks the most an AU player has scored in a single-game this season.
Asbury controlled the pace of the game and possession as they dominated the draw control margin 19-10, scored four goals on extra man-up opportunities, and out-shot BU 42-16.
Ashley Byrd and Maddie White both finished with four goals apiece to help pace the Eagles' attack. White also provided two assists.
Sarah Smith tallied three goals and Jade Franchino, Doron, and Ana D'Ettorre each scored one goal. Doron and Allie Hoskins both tabbed two assists.
Elle Crossman posted five saves.
