Softball Upended at West Virginia Tech

BECKLEY, W.Va. --  The Asbury University softball team dropped two games at West Virginia Tech on Saturday in River States Conference (RSC) play.

The Eagles fell in game one 10-3 and lost game two by a score of 2-0.

AU returns to play at home on Wednesday for their home opener against Kentucky State.

Game one

WVU Tech added three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 advantage.

The Golden Bears scored once again in the bottom of the third off a dropped fly ball to take a 4-0 lead. The inning continued with another run scored off an error, this time in the infield on a ground ball.

Through the first three innings of action, AU was held to only one hit.

Asbury got back into the game in the top of the fourth inning. Paige Hill drew a walk, followed by back-to-back singles from Deana Phillips and Faith Day, which brought Hill home to cut the lead down to 5-1.

Moments later, Shauna McKain singled to deep-right centerfield to push both Phillips and Day across the plate and made it a two-run ballgame at 5-3.

The Golden Bears got two runs back in the next half inning with two runs scored off a triple.

WVU Tech scored two more nus in the bottom of the six to take a 10-3 lead.

Faith Day finished the day at the plate 2-3 with an RBI and run scored.

Ally Moore and Deana Phillips each tossed three innings in the contest.

 

Game two

AU gave up one run each in the first and fourth inning.

The Eagles were held to only four hits as Deana Phillips led the way with 2-3 performance at the plate.

Paige Hill and Bree Sanders each collected one hit. Asbury had opportunities to put runners at home, but ended up stranding eight runners on base.

Hill also started in the circle for game two and pitched all six innings. She struck out six batters throughout the course of the contest.
