RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The Asbury University men's basketball team held off Rio Grande 84-79 on Tuesday evening at Rio Grande in River States Conference play.
Asbury improves to 12-7 on the year and has won four straight games. Additionally, the Eagles are now 6-3 in RSC action.
Senior Clif Conley was nearly unstoppable from the floor on Tuesday as he scored a career-high 37 points on 12-15 shooting from the floor.
Conley was a perfect 5-5 from three-point territory and 8-9 from the free throw line.
However, Asbury got off to a slow start and trailed 24-16 at the midway mark of the opening half.
Down 29-20, the Eagles turned things around in a hurry and jumped ahead on a 10-0 run, as Clif Conley scored eight points in the short run to regain the advantage.
Asbury trailed 36-35 later on in the half before Conley took the game over and scored 15 straight points for AU and the Eagles extended their lead out to 50-39.
Asbury pushed its lead out 16 points at 61-45 and began to pull away in the second half.
Rio Grande put together a late rally and closed the lead down to five at 80-75, but Asbury got the key stops they needed on defense and Deion Cochran's bucket with 14 seconds to play put AU ahead 83-75 to seal the deal.
Trenton Thompson tabbed his seventh double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Siah Holifield also cracked double figures scoring with 11 points and five rebounds.
Between the trio of Conley, Holifield, and Thompson, they combined for 68 of Asbury's 84 points.
Clarien Washington also scored seven points and Deion Cochran brought in seven rebounds.
The Eagles shot 48 percent from the floor and out-rebounded Rio Grande on the glass 38-24.
