NEW ALBANY, Ind. - It was the first meeting for both squads in dual matches since last year's Conference Championship matches and the Eagles didn't disappoint on the road against IU-Southeast. The women, who upended the Grenadiers in the conference championships a season ago and ended their 17 year reign over the conference, swept the match 9-0 to convincingly grab the win. Meanwhile the men battled and came out victorious with a 5-4 decision.
The women had little trouble getting wins from top to bottom of the lineup in both double and singles competition. The number two duo of Laura Ross and Sarah Beth Alford took a clean sheet in 8-0 in their match and Emily Ross and Alex LoPrinzi captured an 8-2 decision.
At No. 1 double Alejandra Diaz Mares and Caitlin Conyers were in the most competitive match of doubles play but came out with the win in 8-6 fashion to put the Eagles in need of just two singles matches for the win.
Conyers (6-2, 6-0 (#1)), Alford (6-0, 6-1 (#3)), and LoPrinzi (6-1, 6-1 (#4)) raced to the finish to secure the team win for Asbury as each player grabbed convicing wins.
Diaz Mares, Emily Ross, and Laura Ross finished off the sweep with wins in their matches as well. Ale dropped her first set to Alexis Applegate but rebounded for a 2-6, 6-2, 10-7 win at No. 2 singles.
On the men's side things were a bit tighter in the match. After doubles AU led 2-1, getting wins from the Abrahams at No. 1 doubles and from Joshua Turnquest and Julian Tellez at No. 2 but falling at No. 3.
Turnquest grabbed the 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles and the Eagles secured the win with Joshua Abraham's No. 2 win (5-7, 6-2, 6-3) and Aquille Trotman's No. 6 win (6-1, 6-2). The Grenadiers grabbed wins in the three through five spots to tighten the match up.
AU returns with three matches this week included a trip to IU-East for both teams on Friday.
