WILMORE, Kentucky – Softball opened conference play by splitting a doubleheader with Indiana University Southeast. The Eagles took the first game 8-3 before losing the second 8-0.
In game one, an explosive first inning put the Eagles in the driver's seat. Alyssa Gaines drove in the first run for the Eagles with a single to left field that allowed Kendall Anderson to get across the plate. From there, IUSE surrendered five more runs and were held scoreless for the next three innings.
Deana Phillips recorded the win for the Eagles after pitching all seven innings and only allowing three runs to the visitors. She leads the Asbury pitching staff with an ERA of only 3.93.
Phillips also got her first home run of the season with a two-run hit that cleared the left-center field fences. Seven different Eagles ended the game with hits.
The Eagles offensive momentum didn't carry over into the second game, as IUSE went on to take the contest 8-0.
Emmy Gillis and Ally Moore split time on the mound, allowing four runs a piece. At the plate, Phillips and Amara Wylie were the only Eagles able to register hits. Phillips opened the game with a double to deep right-center field.
With today's results, Asbury starts the season 1-1 in the River States Conference and will have a chance to improve that against conference foes Brescia in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. Game one is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
