RIO GRANDE, Ohio – It was always going to be a battle for the Asbury men's soccer team to get through to the next round, especially against the team ranked third in the NAIA. The final score line of 6-1 shows how much the Eagles had to throw forward after going down early.
Two quick goals back to back from Rio in the 20th minute meant that the Eagles had to chase the game. After being out possessed and out shot for much of the first half, it would take some grit to try and get back in the game.
In the 37th minute, Ryan Metcalf provided just that. He got on the end of a ball from Sam Henderson after a scramble in the box, netting a goal that put the Eagles back into the game at 2-1. It was Metcalf's eighth goal of the season, and the fourth assist by Henderson.
After the halftime break, Rio hit back, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes of the half. With the season on the line, Asbury chased the game, but wasn't able to make up the difference.
Head coach Ben Andrew's squad ends the season with an 11-8-1 record, the highest win total for an Asbury team since 2013. In all the season was a success. The Eagles scored the most goals (70) since 2011 and 2012 when they netted 77 goals and also gave up the fewest goals since 2011.
Four Eagles were named to the All-RSC first and second teams. Right back Austin Baker was selected to the first-team for the second year in a row. Freshman Noah Welch capped off his season as the team's leader in goals (16) and assists (10), the season totals for an Asbury player since 2012, on his way to a second-team All-RSC nomination.
