WILMORE, Kentucky – Noah Welch would notch twice against University of Cincinnati-Clermont in the Eagles 6-0 win on homecoming night. A commanding first half set the tone for a good night in front of a big home crowd.
Welch would score his first within the game's first 10 minutes after a free kick that fell in the box wasn't cleared by the UCC defense. He would score again in the 22nd minute off a great bit of passing play. Ryan Metcalf unlocked the defense with a superb backheel pass that Welch collected in stride. The freshman tucked the ball into the far post past the outstretched goalkeeper.
Landon Brown would raise the bar for beautiful goals higher with his freekick in the 25th minute. His curling shot cleared the wall and found the top left corner, leaving the UCC goalie no chance.
The Asbury defense would hold the Cougars scoreless for the rest of the half. A header inside the box gave a brief scare, but Eagles goalkeeper Micah Peñalva made a reflex save, sprawling to his left to parry the shot out for a corner.
For the opening minutes of the second half, the pressure would continue for the Eagles, but the finishing touch just wouldn't come. The Eagles would hit the post twice as they looked to increase their lead. Peñalva would get called on again when UCC finally broke the pressure and got through on goal, poking the ball away from the attackers feet as he ran into the box.
Soon after, the goals would finally come for the Eagles, with Cliff Evans finishing off a cross from Welch at the back post. Welch would complete his hat trick in the 83rd minute, getting on the end of a long ball and speeding into the box, finishing with a knuckling shot past the helpless UCC goalkeeper.
Zack Andrews capped off the evening with a goal, rising up at the back post to head a ball into the back of the net.
Asbury will have five days off before returning to the field, this time against conference foe Brescia University. They'll play at home against the Bearcats at 6 p.m.
